…I need your blissful touch to carry me away again…

Before my father arrived this afternoon the buzzer rang to tell me someone was at my door. Thinking it was my father, I went down. A woman was there and said she had an environmental pamphlet. I took it, of course, because I am an environmentalist myself.

Upon opening the pamphlet I discovered that it was a Jehevoah’s Witness propaganda work. While I appreciate that they care about the environment, I hate how deceitful their religion and practices are. They may follow some Christian themes, but they are cunning manipulators and deceivers.

Later my father did arrive and we headed for home. In Enfield we stopped for some ice cream. I got some cotton candy, of course.

I finished The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara: Morgawr this afternoon. It was a very satisfying read, and is easily the best Shannara book to date. It also set up the next trilogy very well. I’m looking forward to reading it with much anticipation.

I’m currently reading the first volume of Year’s Best Fantasy from 2001. It should be quite good. I’ve been putting off reading it for quite some time, but now I hope to finish up it and another anthology, Legends (3), I have.

At the apartment I did a bit of downloading. While many downloads were fakes, I did manage to nab some Fiona Apple, Live, Lillix and The Trews songs, along with the Live video for “Heaven” and Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara audio book.

“Run Away” by Live has to be one of the most beautiful songs I have heard that was released this year. Wow, it’s tear inducing and so elegant in its simplicity. I must get Birds of Pray very soon. This is a must-have album.

Concert on the Hill 2003

Friday night I talked with Ashley some, and I tried calling Alisha, though the line was busy. I hope to be able to call her before I leave on Sunday.

Today I woke early. I showered, dressed and walked to the mall. I had breakfast burritos and then got a couple things to give to Ashley when she comes here. I also bought a sharpie so that I can lable my CD’s properly.

On my way back here Ashley called my cell so we talked for a little while before I headed downtown. There I looked for things for Ashley, and had a peanut buster parfait at DQ. I walked around some, looked in different stores and then went to the line for entrance to Concert on the Hill 2003.

Once inside I wandered around for a few minutes until the glorious foursome of Sascha, his brother Shane, sister Kristine (all Richers) and Sarah Skipper found this beacon of wisdom and joy amid so many hundreds. It’s good to know I am easy to find and that I stand out in a crowd.

We eventually moved up onto the hill to establish a sitting area, and we talked of the many interesting things we like, music, politics, books, and other important topics. It was so wonderful to talk with my friends again. I can’t tell you how much I miss Sarah and Sascha. They are tons of fun!

The first act to perform were The Trews (website). One word sums them up: WOW. I’ve seen them perform 5 or 6 times, and they have made a huge leap forward in the past year. They put on what would prove to be the best show of the day (possibly tied with Nickelback). Gordie Johnson’s tutilage has definitely made this band incredibly promising. These boys will be headlining events like this in 2 years. Mark my words. They are incredible!

After their set I picked up their CD single for “Every Inambition”, since it was cheap and I need something to tide me over until August when their debut album will be released.

After that set was Three Days Grace. They were very, very mediocre so we just talked back on the hill while they played. It was time well spent.

Crush did their usual high quality pop-rock with great results. It was a solid set, and I enjoyed it very much. Their new material is sounding great, so I’ll likely pick up their next album.

When Finger Eleven came on I dashed back down the hill to immerse myself in the pit. They put on a really great set, and touched on a lot of my favorite songs. It was a great set, about on par with the last time I saw them live.

Default was flat tonight… nothing that stood out much at all. Even their singles seemed hollow from the hill, and ground (if Sascha’s word is to be believed). I spent the time before and during that set talking with Sarah about life, politics, school, and books. It was really very pleasant to talk with her again. We always have really great conversations, I think.

Just after their set a girl I knew from high school, Amanda, came up and said, “Hey Jesus!” It’s nice to know I’m well remembered and that my saviourhood is still affirmed. She was apparantly taking photos of everyone she ran into making a “mean face” so I did my best to accomidate her photography experiment. I did ask her to allow me to take a similar photo of her.

Nickelback was surprisingly excellent. Chad really knows how to work the crowd and keep things interesting. The pyro and lights were very well done, and only served to enhance their performance. Their set was filled with hits and songs I enjoy, and even included an interesting new song. I was surprised to learn that “Leader of Men”, my favorite Nickelback song, is actually about magic mushrooms. Examining the lyrics it’s obvious now. I enjoy Nickelback, but they haven’t been in my top 100. Their live act certainly is now, though. I’ll be going to see them when they return to Halifax.

Post-concert I walked with the Richers and the Skipper to their car. Then I traversed the city and came home.

Once here I called Ashley and we talked for an hour or so. Now I will soon sleep.

Weekend

I worked in the too-hot sun today. I dislike weather like this very much. 30 C (83 F) in the shade! Crazy.
For lunch I had garlic fingers and chicken pizza. It was quite tastey. Dessert was fruit salad. Yum.
This morning my aunt Lucy told me she can drive me into Halifax around noon tomorrow. When I arrived home I called Nathan to see if I could crash at the apartment, and I surely will be doing that.
So, I’ll be in Halifax for the weekend.
Saturday night I will be seeing Tom Cochrane and special guest Damnhait Doyle. Tickets are just 14.98 + tax. I will definitely be seeing this one.
Saturday will also be the Concert on the Hill featuring The Trews, Three Days Grace, Crush, Finger Eleven, Default and Nickelback. Gates open at 2 p.m.
I may skip Concert on the Hill in order to see Tom. He’s juat an amazing artist and has long been one of my all time favorites. Not seeing him would be a huge disappointment! Plus, The Trews, Crush and Finger Eleven will only have 40 minute sets, and the other acts aren’t that high on my list of favorites.
Time will tell what happens.

Pond

Today at work was pond cleaning day. It really does take a full day to properly clean the fish pond. First I have to begin pumping water out. Then the fish must be caught and kept safely in clean water. The water and sludge must be carefully scooped away. Then the rocks and fountain pieces must be scrubbed free of green. The aquatic plants must be cut back and the new ones (pink and yellow lilies) must be prepared and placed in proper containers. Then I rearrange the pieces to create a pleasant to look environment for the fish that will also provide them with the best living conditions. Clean water is next added, followed by the fish.

I discovered that my fish reproduced. I now have 3 new albino coy to add to my 11 adult fish count. They were only a few inches long, and must have been among the 7 tiny fish I rescued last summer while cleaning. The unkillable fish are multiplying. Perhaps I’ll have 3 more foot-long albino coy to accompany their mother.

The new frog fountain has less pressure than I had hoped, but it sure looks nice among the other pond features.

My brown rabbit is getting braver, but it keeps to eating weeds, so we have a good working relationship.

6 days until Canada Day! I must do something special for the greatest holiday of the year. Perhaps some face paint photos to express my patriotism? A recounting of some of my favorite Canadian memories? A history lesson?

In just a couple weeks Ashley should be here. I’ve been looking forward to seeing her again for so long, so I guess the coming days will not be too difficult to deal with. It will be so wonderful to spend time together again.

I’ve been missing my pretty haired inspired disciple something fierce. Time online just isn’t the same without Alisha’s wit and her genuine wonderfulness. I hope her treatment is going well and that she will make real progress. I’ve certainly been worrying about her a lot. Good saviourly vibes, as always.

I’ve been thinking more on the zine idea, and I think I’ll make a test issue over the next few weeks to see how it would work. I’m sure I could come up with the content to fill it, I’ll just have to toy around with a proper name and a quality layout that would work both online and in print.

I miss having my friends draw pictures of me. Anyone want to do that? I’d love you and somehow try to repay you with my own limited talent.

I’ve really gotten into Morgawr the past couple nights. It’s a wonderful book, and by far the best in The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy.I might have to pick up Terry Brooks’ next book, Jarka Ruus in hardcover in August. It promises to be brilliant and have a great premise.

After that series I really hope Terry will return to Word / Void for some of his excellent urban fantasy.

The Marvelous 3 are brilliant. Their song “Katrina” makes me smile every time I hear it.

My Disciples Are Amazing

Please read my silly disciple Wanda’s short story”Amber“. It’s really very good!

My disciples are great writers.

I’m toying with creating a zine starting this Fall. It’d be a collection of interviews, reviews, short stories, and anything else that could be contributed. It’d likely be a print and online one. Would anyone be willing to help out and provide content? Does it sound like an idea worthy of my time and possibly yours?

A Day

This morning I went shopping for work. I picked up some basics at the Co-op, a bunch of flowers and a frog fountain from Farmer Clem’s. I was able to have most of the flowers planted by the time I left, though the frog needs some tinkering so that he’ll spit the proper amount of water to keep my fish happy. Tomorrow will be “clean the pond” day. My fish will be happy in a pool while I empty, scrub and refill their home. They’ll have new water lilies, the fountain and perhaps some other goodies to make their resiliant fish lives more beautiful. I must remember to bring a camera to work sometime soon to take some photos of my work.

Matthew Sweet’s cover of Cortez the Killer is likely one of my favorite songs ever. It’s so well done, and sounds amazing for a live track. Plus the sentiment and lyrics are so brilliant and relevent. Look for it if you can.

Moths + Fireflies

The tide of breath began anew

Quivering replaced her still corpse-rest

She could not feel but did

Heavyness sat upon her lidded eyes

Light in instant-glows she knew

Through those translucent wings

Eye-lashed wings she could not use to fly

Joined in the movement denying death

The little-weight lifted from her face

And the pale twin moons appeared

Unveiled as curtain-clouds drew away

Returned and lifted again

Between her eyes and grey lined limbs

Appendages ice-dusted and nearly lit

The lights and grey winds weaved

More knots around those keeping her within

Void within her chest, memories and song

Bound with soul-knots, shards chained

A thousand threads pulled away

A thousand more retied in dance

Yellow-green sparks dropped to her

Did not burn or warm, they chilled

She let them light her legs, arms, emptiness

Sleep she longed, eyes too wide

Grey wings drew her gaze abroad

But their cloud grew deeper

Then all the wings seethed and boiled

Lightly they fell to clothe a void

[--------------------------------------]

Her legs gained strength, broke through frost

They drew up, clear of dark, white moss

Her ice-coated joints thawed with motion

The threads slipped back into the dark

Fingers met palms; claws, flesh

No tears, no blood, no pain released

Still tension gripped her limbs

Light and wings mingled in their dance

Lips, dry, ice cracked, and red

Tore apart, breath alone set free

Her voice was silent in void

Her song, her soul, her love its company

Her life was lost, brittle in the chill

Yet shakily her shoulders lifted

And she somehow rose on splintered legs

The lights fell upon her hair; wings, her skin

In a circle she turned with purpose

‘Till path to water, metal, glass she knew

A foot slid forward and resistant ice moved

Sunken holes, whitened, walked forward

Through razor-branches, unslowed, she ran

Gashes instantly covered by wings

Let not a drop mar the white

Of her skin, the snow, the cold, the void

At last, when lines would have clothed her

Had she not a gown of tattered grey

The limbs gave way to a shore

Of rock before snow lidded water

[--------------------------------------]

A line she walked upon the ice

Feet and legs lifting slightly up

Above stillest water’s white skin

Moving to the center slowly

The snow-floor collapsed beneath her

Down she plunged into the dead lake

Giving motion and waves to it

In her pocket of disturbance

Legs striving and arms sliding wild

She faced down to the dark below

Pushed and pulled against the waters

As they futilely forced her up

The liquid was long unnoticed

In her lungs as she gasped at last

Still she swam on resolutely

In the trail of small white bubbles

Her dark hair exploding backward

Was all that separated her

From the waters around her skin

All pale but for the burst of coal

Tension gone, all fluid motion

Thawing in the ice-cold blackness

Dropping as a long stone of quartz

To the bottom of emptiness

Her arms before her hit the earth

Breaking her fall and turning her

Around her center as she searched

The bottom for the truest blade

Her fingertips brushed the handle

Warmth crept up them to her knuckles

Then the cold flowed back like lightning

As she drifted and lost contact

One hand found and grasped the sharp blade

A red cloud swiftly covered both

Sharp heat swept up her hand and arm

Filling her body, limbs and mind

Flames lept over her shielded soul

Not breaking through the cold hard shell

Thawing her mind and deeper thoughts

Not breaking false threads or pain

The lights and grey wings pulled on threads

Lifting her to the light above

Slowly rising with the blade

Lifting heat with it beside her

Her head broke free of the water

A deep breath of air she drew in

Coughing and aching she floated

With thoughts of the one consuming

[--------------------------------------]

With Truth in hand she walked the path

Silently mouthing forgiveness

Surrounded by her green-grey cloud

Stepping straight through cutting branches

Inner swarm of revelations

Thoughts and pieces of memory

A storm quick-dancing in her mind

Each piece telling all she could be

Three types of tears flowed around her

Circling with each step she took

Cold white joining with her deep cloud

Wings and lights falling to her hair

White around her thickened, blinding

Ice-coating her gown of yellow-grey

Beneath the wings she felt nothing

A tempest of mind drawing in

Thoughts which she now feared forgetting

Collected on her mind’s blue walls

As the cloud did in her footsteps

While through the trees she sped onward

Silence, but for the wind, pushed her

Forward through the scratching branches

She raged, slow and ice-calm, deeper

With every thought fallen inside

Clothed in tattered, flowing strands

Hair, wings and coals deep-encapsuled

With the ice reflecting no light

Not from within nor from without

With every footfall she found truth

Melting the shards of memory

Collectng her mind and soul at last

Even as her feet slid through snow

Wings and sparks broke from threads and ice

Filling now empty air again

Her circling lights brightening

Lessening outer emptiness

The blade in her hand rising now

Lit with blue and drawing the sparks

Burning and absorbing them all

A soft torch lighting her old way

Her mind was filling with one thought

Of love, her unbroken promise

Wishing nothing more than return

To the comfort and completeness

From the blue she drew greater strength

Filling her limbs with like-fire

She burst into a heated run

Desperately parting the snow

[--------------------------------------]

Contained by his own apathy

A messenger stood upon stone

Pushed by grey and losing hope

No need to fight once love was lost

Wind alone held him from falling

Corruption’s cold hordes snarled and bit

True messages to be destroyed

Hopeful voices left quieted

Alone he faught with half his heart

For the rest betrayal had killed

No comfort and only white

Biting white cold from behind him

Jaws and nails raked his body red

Tears freezing all along his chest

For no cause he stood defeated

Ready to fall beneath evils

The grey collected as a fog

Reshaping, solidifying

On death it fed, and hopelessness

Both radiated from this loss

Teeth and throat bared marked the ending

Of this defiance and his life

Grey coiled and anticipated

Then shot through the snow filled air

Blue fire cut swiftly through throat

A body fell down into snow

And it was covered slowly silent

Watched over as it grey-faded

Her blade, her truth fell before him

It too joined the snow as eyes met

Wordless mending collected there

Between the haunted true lovers

Warmth carried fast through an embrace

Regained comforts and wholeness flare

Together in the falling cold

Defiance, truth and hope returned

Solving words were saved for later

Ease replaced their worried losses

Hands warmed entwined, souls reknit threads

Healed souls restep the sharpened path

On her word they stopped abruptly

Wings and lights were seen when she turned

Above the sunken blade they flew

Tiny guardians of this truth

Fleet she dashed to reach the true blade

Cold within cold met her cut hand

Love warmed her heart so truth was still

Ready and resiliant within

He stepped near and held her free hand

The path of paths before them stood

Healing and the hurt world waited

The snow did not stop, nor did hope

Grania + Roth [V: After Dream]

After Dream

I awake to the grey numbness of day

Caged still in a room amid towers

Grey words echo false kings’ heated lies

To a world chained in both mind and body

Hope and Love cling beyond the dream

Fortifying my mind and will

With echos and visions of my love

And the need to protect us all

I am not the strongest nor the only

But maybe my mind’s the true key

I can’t forsake the world now

Not if she does need me to speak

After a lone night I know my path

Words encased in truth and amethist

Spill from my mind upon the white

Leaves collecting that collect insight

At this point my story is more true

Than those presented to the world

As the only facts left undenyable

For it has always been told

For the real can hold onto love

Through every breath and life

We discard our every hate

And fight back against the clouds

Not only have I seen a place

Sheltered from this terror-plague

But I live as proof we can survive

Immune to all the blinding fear

I step upon the old cracked stones

Clarity fusing black feathers

With the marrow of this scarecrow

Bleeding new myths with the truth

I’m carried forth by drums

Heartbeats drowning out the grey

Threads pulling closer

Until my head is filled with cries

I step under the deep trees

Let the green swallow clouds

As I move towards a messenger

To unlock what I know
